DHS Year 9 Writers festival 2015

Living Stories

As part of the year 9 curriculum students at Year 9 develop their writing through a writer’s notebook program to develop their skills as writers. This program culminates in a year level celebration of writing that involves student writing ambassadors from each house leading writing workshops. Students also have the opportunity to attend workshops with guest authors and teacher led writing workshops.IMG_2596

On Tuesday October 13th students met at the Martin Culkin Theater for the opening ceremony for the 2015 year 9 writers festival: Living Stories. Each house gave four house awards to deserving student writers in four different categories. The categories were: the house leaders award, most improved award, creativity award and the outstanding story award. Mrs. Susan Ogden selected a first, second and third place winner for the Principal’s awards. The Principal’s awards winners were:

3rd place: The Mystic Fish and the Parrot by Jasmine Nayler of Fern 9.

2nd place: Poem by Bul Pal of Grevillea 9

1st place: Being a Hero by Joe Tan of Banksia 9

Congratulations to all our award winners and all the talented young writers in year 9 at Dandenong High School.

After the awards our guest writers Archimede Fussillo who is an award winning author and Simon Conlon who is a talented story teller and the facilitator of the 100 Story Building Writing Project, a creative writing program for schools, spoke to students about the importance of storytelling.

Students participated in workshops during periods 2 and 3 and then during period 4 students met back at Martin Culkin Theatre for a closing ceremony which included a performance by our talented year 12 drama students based on the Script in a Day workshop run . The year 12 drama students performed plays written by our year 9 students earlier in the day within the Script in a Day workshop run by Ffion Bowles

The Writers Festival was an exciting and successful celebration of student writing with students actively participated in writing as leaders and learners throughout the day.
